Wren

The whole party stopped as Samyeza helped Drake walk in.

In the space of a heartbeat, Lucifer went from congenial party host to the lord of Hell.

“What happened?” he demanded.

“Azazel,” Drake rasped.

Fear lanced through me as I looked Drake over better. He looked terrible but he was already healing. His skin was covered in thick cuts and his clothes looked singed. Samyeza didn’t look much better, but at least he didn’t look like he was about to pass out.

“Here?” Lucifer asked.

Samyeza nodded.

“What happened?”

“Let me get him upstairs. Then we can talk.”

Lucifer nodded absently. “Yes. Good. Wren, go with him, will you?”

I vaguely registered the party breaking up as I followed Samyeza and Drake upstairs. Samyeza got him into his room and onto his bed. Drake grimaced as he shifted himself.

“Do not leave the house,” Samyeza warned. “Serenity!”

I looked at him. “What?”

“Do not leave the house.”

I nodded numbly. “No. No, I won’t.”

“Stay with him. I will be downstairs if you need anything.”

“Of course.”

The Grigori left us, closing the door. I dropped onto the bed next to Drake and he smiled at me softly.

“You should see the other guy,” he said.

“Did you see the other guy?” I asked, surprised he’d managed to walk away.

Drake tapped the side of his head almost drunkenly. “I can’t turn it off right now, Wren. Just so you know.”

I blinked. “I doubt I’m going to be thinking anything I don’t want you to hear,” I said, then immediately pictured him pulling me onto him and slowly making love to me. I cleared my throat as he chuckled roughly.

“I could be persuaded,” he said.

“I think you’ve got more important things to worry about,” I told him.

Drake shook his head. “Nothing’s more important than you.”

My heart fluttered happily and I tried not to smile on hearing that. It didn’t feel right to be smiling goofily while he was hurt.

“I’m healing,” he said grumpily. “I’ll be fine.”

“What happened?” I asked.

He took my hand, lacing his fingers with mine. “Azazel took me by surprise. I swear the bastard’s insane. When I thought that was it – he’d kill me and you’d be safe – it was okay. At least you’d be okay. He wouldn’t possibly hurt an innocent.” He laughed but there was no humour in it. “But then he threatened you. Fucker was going on about triggers, wanted me to go supernova. He found it. My trigger.” He winced as he pulled himself to resting on his elbow to look at me. His eyes glowed bright red as he searched my face. “It’s you, Wren. The idea of your death is too much for my body to handle…”

I cupped his cheek. “Shh. It’s okay. I’m fine. You need to rest.”

“I did it, Wren. I went supernova. He said he’d kill you and I lost it.”

As much as those words elicited a range of feelings in me, I firmly reminded myself now was not the time to explore them.

“Why not?” he asked. His voice was low and husky, no longer just weary but full of lust.
